Post-District Assembly Update

This June 5th-6th, we participated in the Southern California District's annual gathering of delegates, elders, celebrities, paparazzi press, and Bresee look-alikes - NazCon as I like to call it. We had our fair share of die-hards, goofballs, and rabble-rousers (that's you, Ric Martinez - 2 minutes means 2 minutes!), but all in all, it was a successful convention in which the work of God was celebrated and the people of God were challenged.

Three district licensed ministers (Melissa Tucker [S.D. First], Devin Anderson [Brawley], and Bonita Burgess [Highland]) were granted their ordination while three others (Steve Babbitt [Spring Valley], Alex Iniguez [San Jacinto], and Ryan Tarbox [Colton]) were granted their first district license. We join with God's church in praising Him for how the Spirit continues to call and equip His people for service.

In preparation for next summer, delegates elected 2 ordained elders and 3 lay delegates who would serve as district representatives to the 2017 General Assembly in Indianapolis. While write-ins "Batman" and R&b group "Destiny's Child" made a late push, the assembly ultimately elected Rev.'s Derek Taylor and Steve Rodeheaver as ministerial delegates and Vonda Rodeheaver, Pam Altice, and Dennis Butler as lay delegates.

The assembly also elected Rev. Tom Taylor to a 4 year term as district superintendent, highlighting the anticipation of the work God will continue doing through our Nazarene churches in Southern California. We look forward to seeing God work in new and creative ways as He guides His church through 2016 and beyond.

More information regarding elections and district positions will posted shortly on the district website.

A Word from your SDMI Chair

What are some of the secrets to a new year of strong ministry? First, Look at your strengths - understand what ministries are excelling and why, then build on them. When NASA sends a space shuttle into space, most of the energy is spent on getting it off the ground. Once a ministry is off the ground you can make corrections more easily and often with fewer expenses compared to the start-up costs of a new program. You will be able to watch what is called the winning effect of ministries that are exceeding. They generate excitement and often enlist more people, especially when you enhance the form and function of the ministries. Summer is a great time to look at the DNA of your ministry and plan for this type strategy to take full force in the fall.

Monthly Reporting

Pastors, please continue - or start - recording your monthly church stats here. For those who aren't recording regularly, please remember the old adage:

Every time a bell rings an angel gets its wings, but every time you don't submit your numbers an angel develops scurvy and has to take a week of unpaid sick-leave.

Help angels everywhere stay gainfully employed and healthy - start recording your numbers on time.

Church Financial Stats

We have had people on the district clamoring for monthly church financial reports. If you know someone who can tell us what these are, please send 'em our way. We're very curious.
