Passionate Evangelism

My job finds me often an audience to a delight-filled rendering of the results of one’s obedience to witness - with words - the good news of Christ.  This passionate evangelism is an essential to church momentum and movement. Catch it in Paul’s  words: “I am obligated both to Greeks and barbarians, both to the wise and the foolish. So I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome. For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, first to the Jew and also to the Greek.” (Romans 1:14-16, CSB)

Among several stories this month, here’s one.  Following an evangelism workshop at the Nazarene church, Maggie prayed in trust to God for an opportunity to touch a life with the gospel that day.  On Maggie’s to-do-list was the purchase of a paperback at Barnes & Nobel, recently written by a Christian friend. She made the trip and located the book.  As she reached for it, her hand intersected another with the same agenda. Both excused themselves and apologized. Cody, the other interested party, was curious about the book. Maggie said she knew the book to be about a Christ-centered recovery and salvation for one enslaved in sex-trafficking. Immediately Cody burst into tears.  She identified with the story.  Enslaved in sex-trafficking in her youth in the Murrieta Valley area, her life gave way to fifteen years of prostitution and the consequential loss of parental rights to her child.  She was hungry for hope. Maggie’s answer to prayer was in motion.  The shelves of the surrounding bookcases became a sanctuary as Maggie consoled, counseled, and introduced Cody to new life in Christ. Maggie’s trust in the transcendent God provided an opportunity for transformation and hope to another.  Her facial expression and re-telling of the story thoroughly reflected a Paul-like eagerness and a joy-filled obedience!

May our lives be characterized by an eagerness for the gospel and an obedience to the gentle prodding of our Lord as he leads us to the lost, the broken, and the hurting.

Your District Superintendent - Rev. Tom Taylor
