San Diego Mission Church of the Nazarene

What in The World Is God Doing, For Christ's Sake?

That question has been asked often this past year by Mission Church. The question in itself reminds us to see our church from God's perspective.

1. What in the WORLD?

Our name, Missions Church, reminds us that God expects us to be missional in all we do.

"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age" (Mat 28:19-20 NIV).

World Missions is a priority for us, evidenced in that we gave nearly 11% of our income for World Evangelism. We also sent over 100 individuals from our church to the nations Jesus had in mind in the Great Commission.

2.  What in The World Is GOD DOING?

This report is about God's work in us and through us as we impact the world. Just as Paul reminded the Philippian Church by saying "for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill His good purpose" (Phil 2:13 NIV) we give praise to God for His grace at work within us to fulfill His good purpose.

  • In October we celebrated our 100th Anniversary, with members past and present gathering to celebrate what God is doing through Mission Church.

  • Yet we join St. Paul in saying "But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus" (Phil 3:13-14 NIV). We believe the best years for Mission Church are ahead of us!

  • This year we said "good-bye" to some of God's choice servants who served us for many years. Thanks to Pastors David Runion, Beverly Cook, Brian Frey, Colin Duffy, and Ministry Directors David Cook and Pearl Chavez. May God bless you in your new ministries.

  • Through our Ministry Intern Program, we mentored eight college graduates as they worked at least 20 hours per week with children, teens, and college students. What a privilege to help launch them into their next assignments of ministry.

  • Mission Church Early Childhood Center has been a vital expression of ministry to the families of our community and we praise God for what He is doing through them.

3. For CHRIST'S Sake. . .

We as a church voice our motivation to reach our World with this verse: "For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake" (2 Cor 4:5 NIV)

  • Our pastoral team has served the Lord faithfully during a very challenging year. Thank you Pastors Paul Slater, Chipo Makwakwa, and Karen Balikian. Also our Ministry Directors Jeremy Arruda, Zac Austin, Jon Runion, Maritza Rodriguez, Aaron Harding, and Garrett and Michelle Blevins have ministered to Mission Church for Jesus' sake. Administrative staff Heather Slater, Abigail Crosby, and Kaitlin Runion have served us faithfully and we thank God for each one of you as partners in the Gospel.

  • We praise God sending us Larry Pitcher as Interim Pastor and his preaching and administrative skills are helping us be the church God intends at this time of transition.

  • God has also raised up Godly leaders who serve as our church board. We praise God for their wisdom, vision and faith as they lead us in our pastoral search.

So join us as we praise God for what He is doing in the world for Christ's sake through Mission Church.
